I put Merlin in his /her soaking dish to go out side & eat & get some sun.

Great pics....how in the world is it that your tort is not just sitting licking and nipping at that beautiful red bowl????? All of the torts here would knock themselves out trying to consume the bowl first....lol Beautiful tort....:D

Torts have excellent colour vision and associate the colour red with food they like. Every tort will eat red food ahead of their greens. Their obsession with red often means they will attempt to eat red stuff that isn't food... Red heat lamps turm everything red and torts will try eating substrate and decor thinking its food.

Unfortunately some species of tort (eg Testudo and Sulcata) cannot digest the sugars associated with these red foods, eg bell pepper, tomato, strawberry. So much as our torts love them we have to restrict intake.

Hmmm,thats good to know....IDK he dosent seem to bother with it,just his green. He soaks & eats in it every day. I put him in it in the AM just so I can watch him eat,then the rest goes into his ceramic food dish when I put him back. That way he can go back to it during the day while im at work.
