Eastern Box Turtles vs Star Tortoises: My wife, Patricia, has 3 Eastern Box Turtles and one Gulf Coast Box Turtle. The Gulf Coast Box Turtle is extremely shy. We lost a Gulf Coast hatchling during shipping. I think it was the result of dehydration. We lost another Eastern Box turtle at 3 months from Failure to Thrive. It weighed 4 gm. Every morning it would walk into the pond for a long soak. It ate more than the other turtles, but died at 3 months. We have 4 Indian Star Tortoises and 2 Sri Lankans. The youngest is a male Sri Lankan. So far the tortoises are much more user friendly with no ostensible problems. Have two Toad Ranch enclosures. Acadia lights. Multiple artificial plants. Like Tom suggests have branches of mulberry leaves, hibiscus, Star of Sharon etc. The Tortoises are outside daily. Eat like champs when they return to their indoor enclosure.
