I'd definitely say female then. Males rarely get that big and the tail is short and stubby.

How are you measuring the shell, are you measuring over the top of the shell or are you measuring the Straight Carapace Length (SCL)? I ask because that backside looks like it belongs to a young male to me. However, if the straight carapace length is really 7-8 inches, then its female. Males almost never grow that long.

I was just guesstimating her size. The people who had her before me had her for 8 years they got her from petsmart so I know she's at least 8 yrs old. I'll measure her tomorrow to give you an exact length

I have a 5 inch male and I promise you, there is a big difference. My male's tail wraps up to his "would be belly button" if he is on his back. LOL. I have a small 4.5 inch female with a tail just like yours

Here's one way measure the SCL (if you have calipers, its much easier than using the wall method).

I'm convinced now, LOL, Female.
The tails a little longer than I'm use to seeing in females, but is much shorter than a mature male's. Thats why I was thinking maybe a young male. However, the tort's SCL changes everything. A 6.5 inch male (that would be a BIG male) would be fully mature and have a much longer tail with a well-developed spur on the end.
