Where are you? Might you have a thief, either two legged or four? How dense is the foliage in his area? They are very good at hiding. Often they will dig in a bit at the base of a plant. Have you checked for that?

Oh my god. Found him. The gate outback was open. I walked out and he was snuggled between the neighbors house and their brick wall!

Huge. Heart. Attack.

Now, who left my gate open? Their *bleep* is mine.

I put a lock on my gate for two reasons - help stop theives and to make sure it stays closed when the kids and others are out playing. I've had my share of heart attacks when I thought they were gone too!

Normally, I have a huge iron pole with a weight on it right in front where it swings in (and lock). My husband forgot to put it back after we took a large Sulcata to his new home.

Which means, either our kids or neighbor kids. We don't really allow our kids to play to that area so... I bet $10 that a neighbor kid wanted free admission to our "zoo" (nickname family has given to our home).

Lucky no one else got out. Even our chickens stayed put.

Oh goodness. Heart attack is right. Had one while I read your posting. Happy you found. How about a sight barrier across the bottom of the gate? I have one made of Corten steel that slides, so even if the gate is open, no tortoise can get out. It is 18 inches high I think so I walk over it when need be, or slide it across (not often) when big things have to come or go.

Very good idea! I will suggest it to my husband.
