That doesn't look right. It might just be that it is wet, hard to tell in the picture.

I'm thinking maybe the moisture got too high and he snagged it on some mulch or maybe his plastron

As long as the skin under is not raw, just leave it and the loose skin will rub off as your tort goes about its business.

Ok it's not raw underneath. It seems to be drying up and "breaking away" today. I guess I'll monitor it for the next few days. It scared me lol I've never had one have this happen.

Torts shed skin naturally like all animals.

Snakes do it tidily all in one go. Humans do it in tiny bits that become house dust. Tortoises do it in patches and look downright tatty at times. It's unusual for such a big piece to come loose in one go, but it's the second we have seen on TFO in the last few days strangely :)
