I'm looking at getting a russian tortoise and people only say you need a 8'x4' minimum but I was wondering if I could make a 6'x6' table. I guess what I'm asking is if it better for it to be longer or is it just a certain amount of area it needs?

Square footage is the key.
Not so much the shape.
Russian tortoises walk around a lot...And they are skilled climbers.
Make it as large as you are able to.
Tweak it as needed.
