So I got my tortious a week ago today and have loved every moment of it. It was bothering me I did not know how old it was. So I emailed the place I got it from and found out it hatched September 2012. The measurements show it is just shy of 4" I was wondering if that is too small for the age or normal or even if there is a normal. My RF came from a home of news paper a uv light but not heat and a diet of the same food every day romain lettuce all in a 10 gallon fish tank. I seem to think it likes it's new home I have even seen him sleeping all stretched out and I think that means that it's comfortable. ImageUploadedByTortForum1394125329.438683.jpgm

Hi. That's not too small at all. Mine hatched about 6 months before yours did (I'm not sure of the exact date...) and he's 4.75" and my buddies hatched about the same time and his is 3.75". So from my limited knowledge, yours is right on track

I'm with Drew. They all grow at different rates. For a tortoise raised on newspaper and romaine, that's actually a surprisingly decent shell. I'm glad he has a better home with you now. Beautiful red :D

Rarely will two torts ever be the same size at the same time....the size you give is not out of sorts....and beautiful tort, especially so since the less than desirable conditions prior...

I have to mention, because I am OCD like that :D, this may be a safer water dish for soaking;

The dish you have is commonly sold at pet stores....it is not easily accessible by a tort going in and out, the edges are really high/tall...even though there is a ramp--the design takes into account a slithering snake and not so much a tort who can not slither up the sides easily --they have a tendency to flip...and if the tort flips in the deeper dish they can easily drown....not to freak you out, just sharing is all.

I was actually given that water dish and have replaced it since. That was on day one I have what you said and takes up less room. Once I looked into tortoises I wanted to buy one with a smother shell but then I felt bad for that one. I want to buy another could they be put together or should I wait?

Those bumps that tort has currently will be all but unnoticeable when it is full grown if you continue to provide the right humidity, so I wouldn't worry too much about its shell. As far as the other tort goes, if you get one that is similar in size, you should be fine. Just make sure you quarantine it for 3-6 months before introducing them to each other. It helps you make sure there are no issues with either tort.

+1 to what Angela has said here.
