I have kinda went overboard ob trying to grow my own plants and weeds, everyday I get more seeds in the mail!

Here is what I have out the backdoor at the moment,

My chickweed has started to grow, which I am very pleased with

However all these came through the post the other day

I have always had a green thumb, so when I heard I could grow many of the plants needed for my tortoise, I hopped on it! I love gardening and I myself am caught up in the green thumb. You'll enjoy watching those plants grow up :)

Hope you and your tort enjoy!

I have a black thumb:( I have a hard time growing most anything. So, when you feel like your living in a jungle and you need to dig your way out, ship some of those plants on over.:D

I've learned lately that if you are going to be a tortoise keeper that you also need to be a gardener/farmer. I'm enjoying it immensely too. :)

My husband used our tortoise as an excuse to buy a green house. "well honey, now we need to grow our own..."

LOL! I am terrible at gardening but I find that "my tortoise ate it" is a great excuse!

Yeah, I am using the excuse 'it will be cheaper in the long run to grow his own food' haha I know the Scottish climate isn't known for its awesome growing abilities, so thats why I have planted a big variety of plants, some will be a success others a flop, the chikweed sprouting is promising though!

I've turned green fingered too, all windowsills full of seeds! Nothing gets thrown away anymore as yoghurt pots etc make great re-usable planters! I've got my nieces and nephews involved too so we have a family gardening club

Yeah everything is getting recycled now! From tomato trays to salad pots!

Im getting them off of ebay, however I am buying them direct from the seller aswell. The site is called 'Shelled Warriors' most of the seeds you see cost me about £1-£2 a packet, with maybe 20 seeds in the hibiscus and 800 in the dandelions!!

I get my seeds from amazon and eBay, some are tortoise mix, like Scottish fish I buy dandelions, then there are approved plants that are green lighted on the tortoise table site. I used to spend £1.30 on a bag of spring mix which lasted 3 days and used to wilt quickly under the lights. A packet of seeds costs roughly the same and the tortoise mix for example will make 12 trays! The way Hokies table is planted up now means he has the choice of 10-12 different plants that he can nibble at as and when he wants and they're all fresh, it's far more natural and I'm far happier with this arrangement

They'll munch down in a BIG way.

What I've found is easiest is to get 2' X 3' flat trays, about 2" deep and grow a mixture of tort-tasty things in them, and change them out as they get depleated...got 6 trays in various stages of growth, and it takes my darlings about 2-4 days to need a new tray put in, so I just rotate them.

It does change your viewpoint on gardening, which I love. But now I think, 'oh good, a dandelion flower!'
My male's appetite is so much better when he is eating them fresh from a tray or the ground.
I will often start them in trays, and then once sprouted, plant clumps in the enclosure outside.

Scottish fish, have you considered a cold frame? That extra warmth even on a cloudy day really gets those seeds sprouting. You can use wood or blocks for the sides, with a discarded window or a piece of perspex or polycarbonate for the lid.

Thats awesome! Where are you ordering all those different types of seeds from?
In the US, your gardening stores will have individual seed packets this time of year.

I have thought about cold trays, I have managed to source 4 the now, but If the growing slows up I will piece something together.

I like the idea of rotating trays, I am thinking about doing that, however I need to find out what I can easily grow first.

Looks like you are going to have a lot of plants on your hands!

The past week I was too busy working on my tortoise garden that I completely forgot about ordering seed mixes!
Thankfully, 'round here it isn't too late to get started.
