This is for fun, but it may also help (as a comparison) when prospective turtle or tortoise keepers ask what type of tortoise they should get. Many people are more familiar with dog breeds than turtle and tortoise species and subspecies.

Let's try to factor in size, activity level, housing and maintenance requirements, and breed quirks or typical personality traits. Feel free to make multiple suggestions for what dogs and turtles/tortoises might match up. I realize some of these answers may be intuitive, but if you can articulate the thought process, we would like to know why. :)

I bet @Tom and several others could have a lot of fun with this one...

If a sulcata were a dog, what kind of dog would it be?

Need some turtle people to share their thoughts too... If turtles and tortoises were dogs (breeds), what kind of dogs would they be?

Would a North American wood turtle be a Labrador retriever?

What about a red-eared slider?

I have read of Reeves turtles being "the Golden Retrievers of the aquatic turtle set". Is that pretty accurate? Are there any other dog breeds that would match up better?

Would a stinkpot / common musk turtle be a small terrier?

wood turtles are very aware with a pretty good memory , some are pretty friendly , and seem to have decent learning ability , i'd guess a service dog would be appropriate …… softshells and snapping turtles would be mals or DS , maybe American bulldogs …….

When there is now way... they will make their own way.:D
