I used the book (The Hobbit) that you guys chose for my 7th grade advanced placement class & my 8th grade traditional students and here is how it's going so far:

7th Grade A.P.-- 2 quiz grade average--95%
8th Grade Trad.--2 quiz grade average--87%

They are reading WAY above the recommended number of pages per week:

I recommended 100 pages/wk.
They are reading approx. 150 pages/wk.

They have their exam on it October 28th, and I'm anticipating well above average scores.

On behalf of all my students--THANK YOU TFO!! Excellent choice!! :):):)

Great. I think I will try to get my 7th grader to read it. We are having problems finding books he likes and reading is not a strong point for him

That is great! I read "The Hobbit" when I was an adult. I hope it ignites a passion for reading in the kids who only read when it is assigned.

...and then, on to the Lord of the Rings Trilogy! I know, when I first read them...I couldn't put them down.

I am the odd one out. While I am a huge reader with several books a week, try as I may, I never could get into any of those books. :(

Now, Anthony, you need to let us see the questions on your test so we can decide if you are promoting higher order thinking LOL. And THEN we're going to talk about overall test difficulty, because those advanced kids need to experience struggle at some point in their lives. Perferably sooner rather than later. The struggle, I mean. Totally kidding! I know what it means to have to defend every educational decision!

It was bound to happen sooner or later Kristina that we would have a major difference between us, otherwise we would be too much the same and that would be horrible. :p Really K, it's okay that you have such a serious flaw in taste. :p :D

LMAO! I have great taste lady, look who is talking!!! ;)

But seriously, you aren't kidding. Between wanting the same tortoises and turtles and keeping the same tortoises and turtles and everything else, it was getting almost scary. :D

Thank you for all your feedback everyone! There really has been a positive response to the book. Tomorrow I will quiz my traditional 7th graders, and then I'll really have a benchmark by which to log their progress b/c they're my "tough nut to crack" class! I'll keep everyone updated... :):):)
