I have a 2-3 year old Russian tortoise..she has gone back into hibernation and I don't know if this is normal or not so I'm quite worried...

Hi and welcome:)

I think we need to establish some facts around your tort.

Sorry if this seems like a barrage of questions, but we need to know the specifics.

Is is kept indoors or out?

Pictures of the enclosure and lighting will help and save a thousand words.

What temperatures do you have?

How much weight did your tort lose during hibernation?
Did you soak your tort daily post hibernation?
Does your tort show any signs of floppiness or a runny nose?
Has it eaten anything since hibernation?

I was given her in December and told that because she is young they still can go in and out of hibernation she lives indoors in a large tortoise home she has a 70w bulb in her lamp...she has fed well up until about 4 days ago when she went and buried herself under her straw and hasn't moved since...up until then she would walk about our house and was quite lively

To go into hibernation the temperature must be under 10C/50F

Your temperatures are not that low and your tort has not got back into hibernation. It is simply hiding and inactive.

The reason for inactivity is usually because temperatures are wrong.

For example, your tort needs to bask at 35C/95F in order to be active and digest its food.

In order to be healthy you need a bigger enclosure and to raise humidity.

Your tortoise must have constant access to water - a terracotta plant saucer sunk into the substrate is much better and safer than a pet store reptile bowl.

Your basking lamp needs to hang straight down vertically so that it creates an intense heat spot straight underneath.

What type of bulb is it? Does it emit UVB.

You will need to get a temperature gun (inexpensive from Amazon) to accurately measure the 4 important temperatures: Warm side, cool side, directly under the basking lamp and overnight minimum.

You must soak your tortoise daily for a good 30 minutes in warm water in a high sided bowl that it can't see through while it is not behaving normally.

I have to go and eat my dinner, someone else will hopefully step in while I'm away :)
