Hi HerrL1116:

Keeping baby sulcatas dry is old school. It just shows that your breeder hasn't been keeping up with the new schools of thought on tortoise-keeping.

Stay with us here, read the links we gave you, and your baby will grow to be a happy, healthy and LARGE tortoise with a smooth shell.

I would not use vermiculite in my tortoise enclosure. I am afraid that the tort will eat the small pieces. I have used coconut coir for the past year and have been very satisfied with it. Takes a little bit of work to get it all moist and packed down, but then it holds moisture and is pretty clean.

you can use a plant pot saucer, it's not as deep but holds enough water. you can also try putting some slate or rocks(large enough to not be swallowed) in the bottom of the bowl you have to make it not so deep.

Your bowl was too deep, he flipped trying to get back out once he got in. Your tortoise doesn't look like he is an inch tall yet , I'm not sure though lol just guessing cause he looked pretty small but a much shallower bowl is needed so that he can climb in and out of it easier. :) more like a half inch max or so I would think.. Half an inch might even b too tall. Very shallow for such a little tortoise if you could post pictures of the bowl with your tortoise in it so we can see size and such that would help. :)
