A red-eared slider is a water turtle, so we are getting confused here. Many people in different parts of the world use the terms turtle and tortoise differently.
When we say 'tortoise' here, we mean a shelled reptile that has stumpy, elephant-like legs with no visible toes (but does have toenails) and that lives, eats, hunts, and sleeps on the land. They usually have high-domed shells, but not always.
We even call box tortoises 'box turtles' in the US because the feet all have visible toes.
Red-ear sliders do not eat the same thing most other tortoises eat, and we want to make sure we know what you are talking about so we do not give you bad advice.
