I posted on here saying I was getting a baby. Well, I decided to get one from petsmart. I would like to know gender, (if able to tell yet), to find a name. Holy moly that's a huge tail! I'm going to say male because I'm learning and that tails screams male, to me BUT, I don't have a Russian. Wait for the experts :)

His skin seems to be peeling on his back legs, is that normal? I can take a better picture tomorrow in the sunlight.

Congrats on your new tortoise!
Yep. you have a boy there. Long pointy tail, slit shaped vent. Here is a link to an article with pics that show how you can determine it yourself. :)http://www.tortoiseforum.org/thread...sex-of-your-russian-tortoise-with-pics.87181/

Since you got your tortoise at Petsmart, he has been imported pretty freshly. This means that a fecal exam is absolutely vital - best to do it this week, because if parasites are found (which I expect they will), Petsmart is liable for the vet bill and the treatment. This only holds true for the first 2 weeks after getting a tortoise there though.

The peeling on the back legs is likely just from being kept too dry in the pet store and during shipment. For a few weeks I would soak him daily for 20 minutes in chin deep water, then you can scale back to 2-3x soaking per week. A good resource for RT care info is www.russiantortoise.org. There is also a good FB group for Russian tortoise owners. :)
