I have 2 left over bricks of coconut fiber from my garden. It says it is for use in gardens and it was only $1 a brick. It is a heck of a lot cheaper than the pet store eco earth and what not. No where on it does it say it has any additives and when I used it in my actual garden it puffs up, smells, looks exactly the same.

I am assuming it is and is safe to use?

There maybe unlisted preservatives, insecticides, fungicide, weed killer that you would not detect. I can't detect any poisons on the tomatoes at the markets that come from Mexico or even here in the states, but I know they are there.

Herbicides are a big one, generally they aren't listed but they are there. I wouldn't take the chance, if you are looking for something cheap I would get top soil that is pesticide, and herbicide free, and organic. At my local garden or hardware store I can generally get two cubic feet for three dollars.
