So I've learned that makes living together is no bueno. But can male and female live together? Is that how you mate them? Or are they only together to mate then separated? What kind of home do they need in order to mate properly?...

A pair of any tortoise is a hard thing to achieve with harmony....some species are even more forward/tenacious/aggressive towards one another, regardless of male or female....alot of times male/female are kept in individual enclosures until mating is planned---but only supervised.

Tortoise do not usually hang out in a group ...other than for mating and sometimes to survive harsh weather they will share sleeping quarters until the moment turns favorable to go on their way...

Males are very tenacious with a female and can chase, harass, bite, ram her into submission...so, it is stressful for both--but moreso for the female....
