Extra Scutes!

I found a baby three toed in my turtle pen. He has six vertebrate scutes instead if five! How weird?

i think i read once that if they are incubated at too high or low (i dont remember which) of a temp that it can cause split scutes .. still a cutie though!!

He was born outside. He seems to have growth rings. Temperatures were over 100 degrees from June to September here. Could that be the cause?

Could have been temps at incubating, could just be a defect while developing, it won't effective turtle at all. It will grow and the extra scute will grow. No harm just a unique turtle now :)

Wow how super neat! Congratulations! What a wonderful and unique treasure. I will always remember the first time I found a surprise hatchling in an enclosure: Baby Walnut.

If your tortoise or turtle has extra scutes will it make it more proun to death and also will it affect how it grows?

No, I'll effect. They say they will usually be female. However, many members with split scutes are finding that no to be very accurate either.

Oh my goodness, that's exactly the same as my Russian Harley's split scute :) he is male surprisingly.

Hello everybody ,I actually prefer extra scutes. ,I think it adds interest and helps me identify individuals at a glance. Love those turtle baby's .
