Today I woke up and found my tortoise covered in ants. It is a very severe ant attack. The ants left wounds all over her body and she is barely moving.

We are currently waiting in the vets office now.

RE: Emergency

OMG, I am so sorry. I sure hope she is okay. Are they fire ants? I have never had to deal with those, but if you do a search on the forum, you will find some threads about them and maybe a way to prevent them from getting your tort.
Please let us know, what happens. Again, so sorry, thinking only good wishes for you and your shelled friend.

RE: Emergency

What a horrible way to start the day, but glad you did start your day by checking on her. *fingers crossed* So glad this is one thing I don't have to worry about. :(

RE: Emergency

Hope everything is ok with your tort.

On the ant problem I use Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth. You can get this at a garden center or local feed store. Just sprinkle inside your outside enclosure and around on the ground. You can also put this on your torts food for parasites. You can actually drink it yourself for cleansing parasites.

I use to feed it to my boar goats and milking goats. Helped with the fleas and internal parasites. Kind of good stuff..and it works.

Hope this helps

Oh that's just horrible! If they were fire ants, ugh, I can't even imagine.. I had to deal with them when I lived in Tampa, no fun task at all. I hope she will be ok. Keep us posted please!

RE: Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth - Never heard of this before I googled it and wow, it's used for so many things! I may get some to put around my outdoor enclosure.

I lost a very loved Leopard two years ago to ants! I put her outside for some sun, came back not even 5 minutes later to her covered. :(

Thanks,
Shelly

I've said it before and I am saying it again: I hate ants. Hate them more than mosquitoes! They are the only bugs that make my skin crawl...

Thanks,
Shelly
