The PNW is involved in a big storm and yesterday was awfully windy as the rain poured down. Bob's pen has been flooded for several days, it stops raining just long enough for the water to ebb out then it pours again. During one lull I went out and pulled up 3 cinder blocks and dug a little trench and let the water flow into the empty lot next door. It's been raining hard, and frankly I'm tired of it. I am growing mold on me I'm sure, I have been sick for several days getting up just long enough to care for my animals then laying down again. It's been just miserable and if all the rain hasn't been bad enough, with the yards flooded, and me moldy, about 1 PM, just as my Soaps were starting (Fridays are the best days), the power went off. Heck! So I made sure all the animals were alright, and I had a nap. About 4:30 I was starting to get worried. I use a product called Hot Hands for my smaller tortoises but when I opened the box there was only 2 of them in there, Damn, nobody to blame it on but me! It's bad that way when you live alone.
Maybe my kids were telling the truth all those years ago when they said it wasn't them...hmmm. So I called around and lo and behold there was a Big 5 store that had them. But I've been sick for several days and I wasn't sure I had enough strength to go into town. Well, there's nobody to help me so I got dressed and hauled my a** into town. They had a product called Grabber. I use Hot Hands, and Hot Hands was what I asked for but how much different could they be? Little hot packets are little hot packets...right? So I went home and got out the boxes I keep for this sort of thing and started opening the Grabbers and putting my small tortoises in the small boxes on the Grabbers. An hour later I didn't feel the product was warm enough so I started filling jars with hot water (gas water heater) wrapping them in a towel and putting them in with my small tortoises, who were fairly cold by this time. I made my way out to Bob's shed which was down to 60 degrees according to the thermometer on the wall. I got Queenie and went back into the house. Bob was in his sleeping box on his pig blanket. I know he was cold but what could I do about it? I sure couldn't bring him into the house alone. So I filled jars with hot water and put all my small tortoises in smaller boxes with hot jars. I put several hot jars in the tort tables with my box turtles. And more hot jars with Fat Nat the Russian and Goof Ball the male 3-toed and more jars with Ginger the Eastern and more jars with Bright Eyes the blind Ornata. So the power was out until 10 PM. I had gone around and turned off all the stuff that needed to be off but forgot my TV which blared back on and scared the crap outta me, waking me up quite rudely. The moral of the story is my hot water jars worked much better then the Grabbers that I got up off the sick bed and drove into town to spend $13 that I couldn't afford on a product that didn't work. End of story...hot jars work better then Grabbers.
