December 1, 2016 - ELBRIDGE, N.Y. - A man in critical condition, (http://www.syracuse.com/crime/index...s_die_after_elbridge_fire.html#incart_m-rpt-1) after being dragged out of a house fire in Elbridge is well known around Central New York for a popular haunted house in Clay and for helping to operate a reptile rescue group.
The man injured in the Schaap Road house fire is Scott Dombroski, according to social media posts by his wife, Diana Sleiertin, and others.’
The house also is home to MaxMan Reptile Rescue, an organization Sleiertin began more than 20 years ago, according to the organization's website. Many of the animals died in the fire.
Dombroski is well known for running, with his parents, the Raven Haven, a free haunted house on Thunderbird Lane in Clay.
Dombroski was found unresponsive inside the home by firefighters Thursday morning, said Jordan Fire Chief Douglas Milton. Dombroski was taken to Upstate University Hospital with significant burns and respiratory problems.
Nearly 20 percent of Dombroski's body was burned and he is suffering from severe smoke inhalation, Sleiertin reported on Facebook. She said he was attempting to put out the fire and save the animals that were inside.
Numerous animals were inside when the fire started, Milton said. Sleiertin said all of the reptiles died in the fire, as well as the family's dog, Diesel, and cat, Salem.
MaxMan works with different regional shelters to rescue reptiles from unfit homes and works to get them adopted. The group also holds presentations to educate the public about reptiles.
No one else was in the home when the fire began, Milton said.
The fire at 980 Schaap Rd. was called in at 11:34 a.m. Firefighters with both the Jordan and Baldwinsville fire departments saw flames coming out of the back of the two-story home, and smoke was pouring out of the front windows, fire officials said.
The building sustained significant damage and is currently unlivable, Milton said.
The American Red Cross is currently assisting Sleiertin and two teenagers displaced by the fire, said Daniel Hartman, a spokesman for the Red Cross. Friends have also started to raise money online to help the couple.
