I had a box turtle when I was a child that would stay curled up for hours, and occasionally days. Then he'd be up and running around the yard eating all sorts of bugs and flowers, then dig a hole near a shrub and hide for a month (usually the height of summer) then out and about again. They are funky animals that just sort of live their lives however they want.

When box turtles die they lose all muscle contraction and flop open. If the shell is tightly closed she is alive.

When our Cleo died she had all limbs contracted and head sticking straight out ?
