Good Morning,

This is Steve and I got him approx. a month ago from a pet store. The lady stated he was an adult male Russian and he would not get any bigger but I feel like he’s gotten a lot bigger. Does his shell looks ok? I’m a first time owner.

Thank you!

She was partially right. He IS an adult russian tortoise, but SOME of them DO get a bit bigger (but not much). It IS a small species.

He's a bit beat up, but then, most wild caught Russian tortoises look that way. They must lead a pretty hard life where they come from. He has some nice new growth lines, his eyes are bright and alert, and he looks pretty darned good.

The only way to know is to put him on a scale and get weights weekly or monthly.

Sadly, most of the care info and most of the products sold at pet shops are all wrong. Here is the correct care info for you:

Hello and welcome! Definitely an adult! If we could get a photo of his plastron(under shell) and tail area, we might be able to sex him for you!

Whilst you’re here, don’t suppose you’d mind sharing more on how you keep him? Pet shops give terrible advice so it good to check in with newer members!🥰

Indoor or outdoor set up?
If indoor,
What are your temperatures like? Ie basking temp(directly under the bulb), overall day temps, night temps?
What kind of basking bulb are you using specifically? Packaging photos are good if you have any
What’s your indoor uv type?
How’s humidity reading?
What kind of substrate?

If you’re willing to share more a photo of the set up would be wonderful! Welcome to the forum🐢💚
