While soaking my baby i got distracted.
The sink filled with water and when i got back he was floating.
His head was above water but i didnt wait to see if he could swim i picked him up and dryed him off.
He seems ok but i just gotta know...Can they swim?

Hi! They can, but not for long periods of time. So yes, they can also drown. Your lucky you got back in time.

This was written in another thread the OP posted:

"Heres a not so funny question.
While in the process of soaking my baby zeus... My 2 yr old is up to no good
I put him down...for getting the sink will fill up with water, by the time i finished with my 2 yr old i ran back to the sink. I didnt even think twice i picked him up and dryed him off.. he seems just fine eating walking digging now napping..
The sink was filled all the way up and he was floating his head was above water. I dont know what happen in between there..SO CAN he swim?"

I'm sorry. I was just being sarcastic, and attempting to offer a little humor.

No, in all seriousness, I do not outfit my tortoises with any kind of flotation device, inflatable or otherwise. I don't offer water pools any deeper than what the tortoise can stand in, but still be submerged.

I wouldn't do a chlorinated pool for very long, but a few seconds followed by a fresh water rinse won't hurt anything.

Jacqui is right. Yes they can swim, but yes they can also drown.

Of course for me I prefer using this when I swim:

... and no we are not belittling in any way what happened to you today. I know you must have been panicky there for a bit, I would have.

In a chlorinated pool? I am just curious. I'm guessing for a cool down.

We were just trying to find some humor in what could easily have been a very tragic ending. My sulcata don't have anything even deep enough to swim in. To cool down they either go into their water dish or into their mudwallow (which has been well used this summer).
