I live in Ontario, Canada, and you've probably seen my post on the hermann's tort. But recently I've suddenly bumped into an article on the Tortoise Trust regarding russian torts, and after I did a bit of research on this species I think I prefer these over the hermann's. Why? That's another story for another time.
The problem is, in Canada, there are very few breeders of tortoises, much much less than in the USA. So my problem lies here. Most russian torts are smuggled out of their natural habitats in the thousands to meet the demands of the pet trade. I've tried hard to locate some Canadian tortoise breeders, but none of them carry russians.
I've seen a few for sale on Kijiji and Adpost, claiming they were captive bred. Another reptile store Port Credit Pets also has a russian tort for sale, and saying it was Canadian-bred.
I've read on a forum that many turtles in Canada are smuggled from the USA, so buying a tort from a shop makes me a bit suspicious. Can anyone help me?
Thanks
