Hi, I’m thinking of buying a Russian tortoise on Craigslist, owner stated he found him approximately a month ago and he bought an enclosure, lights, but that he doesn’t have the time for him/her. My concerns are obviously the health of the tortoise. He or she, would be my first tortoise, I do plan on taking it to the vet if I decide to buy. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. He is letting him go for $100 with enclosure and lights….

I rescued an Eastern Hermann tortoise from craigslist. I took a stool sample in to the vet for testing before I had to take the tortoise in for dewormer. Many people on the form have gotten tortoises from craigslist. This tortoise looks good in my opinion, however I am not an expert. I did get a Russian tortoise from the nextdoor app, and she is in a great home doing well.

$100 "re-homing" fee (tho you often can't tell the difference between a rehoming fee and a sales fee these days) including all that stuff is definitely reasonable. Can you indicate how big s/he is (in inches)? Looks pretty small (I wonder if this person actually bought it vs found it). I live in LA and people often "re-home" their Russians for more than that, with less "stuff".

In any case, before you leap in, make sure YOU have the time, resources, and most of all SPACE to keep an adult. Start by reading this article:

That space will be way way way too small for an adult. I can't see the water dish to see if its one of the bad kind, and if the lights are any good.

also just a heads up, I'm fairly certain those are not all recent pictures. Some look like a baby, some are bigger. You can see the substrate changes and changes in the shell shape and size...

Tortoise looks ok, and is worth the $100, but the enclosure is not suitable for that tortoise - too small.
I was thinking of buying two aivituvin enclosure putting them together and making one large enclosure. Do you think that would be enough?

that water dish is a death trap, don't even take it with you.

So the box itself is worth around $80-125 depending, but you need like six of them to be the right size for an adult. and I don't think that substrate is particularly sanitary (seems like it would be hard to clean) Here's my setup, I have four of them, and it would still be too small if mine were also not able to be outside most of the year:

See my post above. You'd need six of them to be proper, I have 4, and its workable but not ideal...

I agree with Yvonne. Looks good but the enclosure for him needs to be a minimum of a 4x8 foot. If you can provide this then you should pass.

I've gotten dozens of tortoises from Craigslist. But most have required immediate veterinary care.
That hasn't been a huge issue since my intent is to try to save them.
It can be hit and miss. But it's almost always expensive. Buying from a reputable breeder might make the most sense

It appears that thevphotos are of different tortoises or of the tortoise at different ages, which would would preclude them finding it a month ago. I would clarify that recent photos are necessary. Also, a beak trim/filing is in order if you choose to adopt.
