Basking light?

Hello just a random question I have, how far from the flooring of my tortoise table does my basking light need to be?

As far as it needs to be to reach the temperature you're looking for. Raise it to cool, lower it to heat. BUT! Most of them say on the box not to have it any closer than 12" from the floor.
