Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum but hoping to get some advice. I have been only raising redfooted tortoises in the past ten years. About a month ago I walked in to a pet store @850 pm and they were about to close and one of the employees had the leopard tortoise hanging upside down and was about to disgard it in the trash I paid 100.00 to take her home with me and took her to the vet and found out a whole bunch of things that is wrong with her she is 6 years old and completely blind and is very scared of everything and has been abused by the previous owner that has had her and i am currently processing charges againest the pet store for what they have done and now that i have had her for a month she is trained to use a litter box and roams the entire house and she follows me everywhere in the house and or yard even if i leave her outside by herself she is at the door waiting for me? Which could be a good thing she will not let me touch her or move her close to her food and when im not at the house she tends to sleep all day? Any suggestions

It sounds to me like they did everything wrong and you did everything right!
I cannot believe that anyone would throw a living creature in the trash. That makes me sick. I am thrilled that you took him in and will obviously take good care of him.
Thank You!
Thank you!

Litter box trained tortoise....?

What they said.

Seriously. In a month you've managed to litter train a blind tortoise?

And how do YOU press charges against someone for abusing an animal. The state/city could but you're not a victim in this so you can't "press charges".

Not trying to be rude, but I am skeptical.

I mean, you could call my tortoise litter box trained too, if his litter box is my bathtub and he waits for a soak to poop lol.

I can't really see any pet store employee throwing away a tortoise like that. And if they were going to just discard it, paying $100 to them is just reinforcing that behavior.

She looks quite healthy. Why would they throw her away? Did they give a reason? Also, how do you litter train a blind tortoise you can't touch? Does she just poop in the same place all the time? I'm glad you've helped her though :)
Are you aware of how to care for leopards? If not, check out the threads in my signature for some info.

Thank you for caring about the leopard and saving her. Thank you also, for doing what ever you can to get those f------ a--h---s. I hope you can make them pay big. If the city you live in does nothing, be sure to spread the word. Heck, send me their address and phone number, I can make people cry with how nasty I can get when it comes to animal abuse.
I think you will have to give her time, lots of time and patience. She has been abused and most likely, every touch she got before probably wasn't nice.

She is beautiful and you are lucky. As mom to several rescue animals it's sad to think that one man's trash is another man's treasure but it is true. We will never understand why some people do such awful things but all we can do is love that critter all we can for the rest of their life.

I just want to thank everyone and for skeptics the city were I am from is in the process of filing charges turns out the were number of complaints from other people and to train your tortoise to use a litter box is hard but she has only went in it 6 times since I brought her home her sense of smell and hearing is great she never is to far behind me always next to my side that I really don't understand it but I'm ok with it just takes baby steps for now and honestly i wasn't for sure that I wanted to join a forum or if I should do all the research on my own but this has been a great thing to be able to communicate with others and be able to share the knowledge together she is truly blessed

She's so lovely. It still makes me sad to think about what could've happened. I know this might be silly but how do you know she's blind? Does she bump into things or can you tell by her eyes or something? Just curious as it could happen to any tortoise and would like to know how you tell.

Where is this pet store? I would post pictures of your tortoise all over your town and tell your story so no one will buy any animals from them and try my hards to run them s.o.b. out of business . Man think i would have hit that person in the eye!

Out of curiosity, did they have one of those coil type UV bulbs over her?

I'm glad you chose to join the forum.
I would have been completely lost without this place.
I had researched and decides on a marinated tortoise but found a red foot at a local pet store. I've known the owner most of my life and the store is a city staple. So I got him and learned more info here than in my research outside of here.

You're tortoise is beautiful and I'm so glad you saved her and am glad to hear that action might be taken against that shop. Please keep us updated on her:)
