On July 4th I saw spot in the soil that was the only wet spot in the turtle pen, After 68 days I figured I would dig to see if there were eggs,I found 2 little box turtles and 1 unhatched egg, I think they were planning on staying there until next spring, their bellies are healed and closed up good. Here is a pic of them, and also some pics of the substrate I use and where I get it from,I let mother nature make it for me here in the back yard. All I do is add leaves to it every fall. I scrape off the top layers and use what is buried underneath that is several years old, you can tell when it is ready by the amount of roots that are growing in it.Never had a problem with fungus or mold getting out of hand and is almost a perfect substrate for woodland turtles and forest tortoises because it holds moisture evenly and in time packs down great.
