Adopted a little 259 gram - 4 yo Redfoot. Craig's list rescue. I know, I know, I've gotta stop looking at Craig's list. But this poor baby was close to death.
Problems
- never been out of her 10 gallon tank
- lower beak overgrown , has a hard time biting off anything
- fed nothing but kale and a little fruit occasionally.
- desiccating heat lamp without water
- no sun - or even a sun substitute lamp
- can't stand. Scoots on back feet " elbows"
- nails were ridiculous. I trimmed them
- too soft plastron
- some eye swelling
- extreme pyramiding , including a concave caprice
- very small for age.
- can't retract head very far seems shell is too small.
On the plus side
- started eating immediately
- chopped up a salad of hybiscus, rasberry leaves, mulberry leaves, watermelon , mazuri. Dusted calcium, Chopped it all up into almost mush and she ate well.
- feeding her on paving tiles to start wear on beak , but I'll have to trim it also.
- soaked her , her shell was so dry , but didn't see her drink yet.
- not shy of me at all. I put eye ointment on her easily.
- getting fishing worms today to feed.
I really had no intention to become a tortoise hospital. But I couldn't just leave it to die without a chance.
If she gets enough nutrient, some sunlight , hydration & some babying maybe ... Just maybe she can walk again. But even if she survives and starts growing , it is most likely this will greatly shorten her life span.
I hope she can poop. This is as severe case of MBD from improper care in every aspect, as I've seen.
Named her Bubbles Galore.
Good luck little one
