I've bought and set up and Arcadia 100W Mercury Vapour D3 Basking lamp. It gives of UBV/UVA and heat. Is this ok? I'm worried that such a big lamp is going to be too much for a baby Hermann's tortoise. Also what distance should it be away from the tortoise. The basking temp seems to be about right but I'm worried it's too close and too much.

Should be fine and Arcadia makes quality stuff.

For mounting distance, I start with the manufacturers recommendation and then fine tune the distance with my thermometer.

Without a UV meter, you won't know what sort of UV you are getting under the bulb and you won't know when the bulb stops producing UV. They can still light up, and not produce any UV. Some stop making UV after only 3 months. Only a meter can tell you this.

I prefer to use a 65 watt flood bulb for light and heat, and an Arcadia UV tube for UV.
