Why is Pyramiding Bad?

I know pyramiding is bad for tortoises but it recently occurred to me that I'm not sure WHY... Does it cause internal problems? Or mobility issues? It it uncomfortable for them?

If all else is good, diet, calcium supplementation, UV, hydration, exercise, etc…, then mild cases of pyramiding are only cosmetic. If all else is not so good, pyramiding can be an external sign of internal problems.

Also, pyramiding in sulcatas is a deformity of their bone. This deformity does not occur in nature, and is therefore an indicator that we are doing something "wrong" here in captivity. In some other species like Indian Stars and some leopards for example, some pyramiding is also noted in wild populations, so in those species, some people would consider mild pyramiding "normal".

The bones that make up the shell should be dense and relatively thin. Pyramided bone is porous, thick, and has a sponge-like appearance.

Because it means something wasn't right with the way the tortoise is cared for.
