Is it okay to give a Russian tort a whole carrot as an occasional treat? I read it helps with keeping their beak trimmed but also know they shouldn't have carrots often and mostly shredded.

Assuming your Russian is an adult, whole carrots are fine as part of a varied diet. Hatchlings may have trouble biting into them, but adults have very strong beaks and have no trouble biting through carrots.

I give my Russian Ophelia carrots a couple times a week. When I rescued her she was low on whatever vitamin they have so the vet said to give her some carrots, and I have done it ever since. And she loves them! Also the vet said it would help with her skin problem she was having at the time, and now her skin looks ten times better then it did then. :)

It is my understanding that you don't feed
them anything larger than their head. If you cut them small enough they should be able to consume. I have two Tortoises, one will eat carrots and the other will not.

RE: Whole carrots &russian torts?

My Boris is an adult. I got him 2 months ago. I have seen some of the local pet stores feed their torts diced carrots but when I got Boris, I read carrots are not part of the main diet and should be shaved and given occasionally so I didn't want to take a chance of him choking on the whole carrot so about once a week i give him about 10 pieces of shaved carrot.
Also I wasn't sure what time frame was considered occasional.

The above is occasional. That is fine.

I'll throw mine a whole carrot or around three baby carrots approximately once every two or three weeks. I've never had any problems with a tortoise choking on carrot.
