You're talking about the hardened scale on top of his head, right? I see this a lot in rescues I take in that were kept too dry.

Hi Squeakermama, can you post a pic. Cherry heads are not native to the US. You could have a boxie though. Or a pet got loose

Torts shed skin. As they grow old skin flacks off & the new lighter skin underneath shows. It often leaves patches till it all falls - or rubs off.
