hello,
I have had my red foot tortoise for a few months now, (July 09) and he used to walk around nice and tall. but now he acts as though he is to heavy to walk. he doesnt lift himself up when he walks. and he is not as active as he use to be. only comes out of his hide to eat. he use to be in and out of his hide all day. any ideas what i need to do to get him back to being strong and active?

Hi Bc21:

We will be more than happy to help you, but we need to have more information. From what you are describing, it sounds like the tortoise hasn't been receiving the kind of care it needs to remain healthy. So, please tell us about your habitat:

Light
substrate
food
temperature
calcium

Maybe shoot us a picture too.

Without knowng more I would assume that it's metabolic bone disease. Has it had access to the sun or UVB bulbs? What have you been feeding it? Is the carapace and plastron softer than it should be? As stated above pics and a list of your care methods and the enclosure would allow for people to help you as best they can.
