I’ve had several tanks over the years. I’ve had Japanese newts that both lived to be 8 years old. A California newt that lived a decade. My salamanders were in a Vivarium setup. My first cat lived to be 21. I’m a very attentive animal parent. I’m moving in with my partner and I want to get a tortoise for myself as a new life pet. I’m now 53 so I’m sure he will out live me. I live in the PNW very mild weather, my neighborhood is filled with redwood cedars so the yard would be filled with dappled sunlight and the woosh of the wind in the trees. We also have a covered patio for shade if needed. And a spare bedroom for a tortoise house and lighting when it’s gets to cold outside. Most people don’t even have conditioning here. Our summers are mild and breezy.

I'm in Corvallis Oregon...have spent many a day in Seattle and Marysville....you wouldn't be keeping a Russian in an aquarium are ya? Salamanders and newts are ok, but Russians are very active and no matter how big, an aquarium just wouldn't do...anyhow...newcomers are all the time coming here and trying to get free animals and such....some of us are pretty careful who we adopt or sell to...Keep you eyes open, you'll get one...100_1673.JPG

Not going to house my tortoise in glass. They can have issues with reflections and glass does nothing for air circulation. I plan on housing him in a standard tortoise house with cypress much and forest floor substrate with proper uvb and heat lamps at a safe distance. It has hiding spots and enough depth area to dig around and bury themselves. I’ve been doing my research. I know they can be found via Petco for $150, but those are wild caught and have been harvested from nature, some up to 10 years old. That doesn’t sit right with me. Those tortoise should remain in their natural environments and NOT be turned into pets. Captive bred are reared to recognize their human and have more of a chance to have a symbiotic relationship. Owning a wild caught tortoise just makes it a captive not a pet.

Looking for a Russian tortoise in Seattle
I may consider letting my boy Boris go to a loving home. I inherited him...and don't know much about them. He has always thrived, and my mom passed in July. He's not acting right...don't know what's wrong with him? I'm stressed out cause I can't lose him...I promised my mom on her death bed, that I would take care of the animals no matter what. I have a horse...2 dobermans, 2 papillons, and Boris. I'm concerned about him cause he's not eating...Think he's sick, and I'm losing my mind. He's going to the vet tomorrow at 4. I live in Vancouver Washington. I would only possibly consider letting him go to someone who if it was the right thing for him. He means alot to me,as he did to my mother. Everything is complicated, and I'm trying my hardest,to make sure that he has everything perfect. But as I read and research,I'm confused cause my mom did things her way...and he was good....but her way, isn't the right way in alot of areas? She was a Veterinarian, but not exotic animals. Dogs and cats...So I'm wondering how you kno about these animals? I want him to have the best life ever. It's really important to me.

Sorry for loss. I hope he is not sick. I’ve had fish tanks since I was young. I’ve had several salamanders, one of lived over a decade others lived around 8 years. And my first cat lived to be 21. I consider myself an animal person, my parents are dog breeders.. so animal husbandry runs in the family. I have a traditional turtle house with no glass..so no attacking their reflection, I’ve heard that is the main cause of stress, I hope your tortoise recovers
