Hay, Well i have Two Tugas, and one has resently developed an underbit. i don't know if it was something i did, or didn't do. but took it to the vet, and they seemed as if they hadn't seen a Tortoise before (so helpful...not!) Anyways, does anyone know if it can be helped, or can it ever go back to normal, and should i be letting him eat Cuttle fish if it will file his beak? :/ S x

Hi M155ALY:

This is posted under "lizards", so I wasn't sure if by "Tugas" you mean some sort of lizard or if you're talking about tortoises?

Lizards develop mouth problems when they are calcium deficient.

Please explain???

Do you mean your tegu has an under-bite? As Yvonne said, all reptiles from turtles to lizards to crocodiles can develop metabolic bone disorder (MBD) if they are undernourished, don't get the right lighting, or both. Please provide pictures so we can be more confident in our assessment. However, sounds like your tegu - if that's the type of lizard you have - could have MBD, so please correct his diet by providing calcium, vitamin D3, and plenty of UVB light. Also might be appropriate to take him to the veterinarian.

See my comment above. Same advice goes for lizards, crocodiles, and turtles in terms of metabolism.

Is it a very bad under-bite? Some turtles have minor under-bites that don't really matter much. But if it's a major one, then it could be a nutritional issue.

BTW - This thread does not belong in the "Lizards" sub-forum.

Sorry everyone, i really do not know how to use this site...but hopefully getting there. i don't know how to post photos, so cant really show you quite yet (untill i figure it out) but its not a bad underbite, its just a wee one. but if i can stop it from developing and getting worse, then i will! on a lighter note, it makes him look really grumpy kinda cute :p x

You can attach photos (or any other file no bigger than 4.34 MB) by going the full reply window (Reply or New Reply, but not the Quick Reply box at the bottom of a thread). Once there, you will find that there is an "Attachments" option at the bottom. Just click on "Choose File," select the image or document from your own computer, and it will be uploaded when you post your comment. :)
