Ugh Mosquitos

I thought since it's so dry this year I wouldn't be swarmed with mosquitos & I've moved out to the country. I've been lax about water bowls. Which is an easy fix. I have my outdoor aviary somewhat close to my torts. I have ziplock bags of water hung. I love thermacell for myself, but was considering using it in the area of my aviary (which I covered with screen, not helping) while spending time with my torts. From what I've read, this should be ok & I have mosquito dunks. Just for some city slicker fun I'll try the beer recipe I found here, that should be a conversation piece.

But I found Mosquito Magician that is interesting. The cedarwood ingredient had me concerned for my torts & this got on the food they eat. I believe the other ingredients are fine. Opinions?

Seems benign enough, and I can’t imagine that the “cedar oil” is of any great percentage compared with the other ingredients. Of course, you can choose where to spray/put down this stuff, so just be cautious. In your case, i think just removing the sources of mosquitos (water), and keep them from laying eggs in the first place. It also looks like you have to keep putting this down weekly or so.

good luck

In all my turtle tubs and pond I have mosquito fish. I got the original fish from our mosquito abatement folks and they reproduce quickly. I change out the tortoise waterers every morning. No mosquitos here.

Put up a bat box. One single bat will eat 1000 mosquitos in one night. A momma bat that is nursing pups needs 3000 calories worth of mosquitos every single night.

I have a friend in South Florida whose 40 acre property is covered with ponds, heavy vegetation and is right next to a river. He has a single large bat box and you can walk around all night long with no spray in short sleeves and flip flops. I was amazed at how effective they were. The guano that collects underneath is excellent fertilizer too.

Does putting up a bat box ever NOT attract bats? Do you have a minimum height it needs to be hung?

I don't know the answer to that. Not enough personal experience. All of the bat boxes that I have seen were full of happy bats though. I have looked myself, so I know that tips for building and hanging them abound online from many sources.
