Thought so. I had a Russian last about 7 years ago that was passed down to me and he died from old age. I called him Houdini because he was one hell of an escape artist.

Now I have another! Some lady found him on the side of the road. Looks healthy!

I think it's a Russian, but very good, slow growth. Must be an old WC I think. Can we have a pic of the plastron though? There is a little niggle at the back of my mind saying it is an old Greek, maybe Morrocan. Don't think it's very likely, but would still like to have a look.

It's a Russian tortoise, Testudo horsfieldi for certain.

GB, you fancy having a shot at the subspecies out of interest? Generally quite good with them, but haven't got a clue about Russians.

I have a really hard time with differentiating RTs from Horsefields... All I know is that that's a beautiful tort! Love the colour!!

...as Afghan tortoises, as Steppe tortoises, as Asian tortoises. I think T. horsfieldi may have the most common names of any tortoise species!

Yes a few use the Steppe one one on here. Testudo Graeca must come close I imagine. Oh and my Serrated/Rosy/Forest/Erosa/Schweigger's hingebacks must be up there.

[GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES] Glad to supply the giggles. Someone corrected me when I said they had "a nice Russian." They told me "no, it was a Horsefield, different species." I guess they're confused as well.
