One of my shingleback skinks shed yesterday, so I thought I would take a few pictures. This is a male that was born in 2008. He is 16" long, and weighs 820 grams. Shinglebacks are Australian lizards, and this sub-species is found in the southwestern part of the continent from coast around Perth inland. They are my favorite lizards of all time.

Not sure why one of their nicknames is "Sleepy Lizard"?

As the owner of an old Irian Jaya blue tongue, I am in love with your lizard. Sadly, I could never afford one of those. :(

Nice skinks and how much do they cost? 3000$?

I don't remember how much they cost. They are way out of my price range, so I don't even look...lol.

$3000 to $4000 if you can find them.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. It is unfortunate that shinglebacks are not more affordable right now, but I produced my first baby last year, and hope to produce tons more in the comming years, which should bring the price down at some point. This is truly a species that everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy. I will try to post pictures of my others tomorrow.

He's one good lookin guy. Whats the typical lifespan of this species?

It is believed that they can live to 40. It's hard to prove because most are aquired as adults and people don't know how old they were at the time they got them. Then the person either dies, or ends up selling the skink. I know of someone that has a group of them that he got as adults over 20 years ago, and they are still breeding.

That is a seriously sexy looking animal!!

I sure hope they become more available in a distant future because they definately are of those species that I'd love to see in my home one day!
