When a female makes test holes, does she usually cover them up as well?

The short answer is no :p If she is digging, lays no eggs, and covers the hole, she has had a phantom nesting (which does happen from time to time).

That's what happened this morning. She dug the hole, and filled it back in, but when I went to dig up the eggs I didn't find any. I was thinking she might have been spooked, or had something wrong. It has only been 3 weeks since she laid her first clutch so I think it's still a little early for her next batch.

My female sulcata doesn't fill them in. She digs 5 or 6 every year. She waits until the afternoon to start her real hole every year in January. I always have to rig some sort of heat for her, so she can finish laying and covering the eggs.

Isn't phantom nesting the sequel to "the phantom menace"?

I think your right dmmj. Both have left me unsatisfied. :)

So if they typically lay eggs every 4 to 6 weeks, does the phantom nest count as if she really laid eggs?
