i've been searching for a while and can't find the answers...

what type(s) of wood can be safely used for a tort table? i am planning on covering all wood surfaces with shelf liner.

i've seen MDF reccomended for the sides, would plywood work just as well?

I have a tort table made of plywood. Covered it with laminate and it works great.

I just built one out of plywood. It's sealed with water based polyurethane. As long as the poly has plenty of time (outside in the sun if you can) to totally dry and cure AND it's water based it should be fine.

I used 1''X12" pine boards for the sides and I floored it with "hardboard" which is a thin, cheap particle-type board available in handy sizes at the home improvement stores. I sealed the cracks with silicone and painted everything. I later decided to experiment and add a plexiglass front for viewing. I'd heard bad reviews about doing this, saying that the tort would pace the glass trying to get out. Mine completely ignores it. If it ever becomes a problem, I'll cover it with wood again.
