Hi, Just been watching my Hermanns and noticed a strange protrusion in his rear leg.

9

He's 20 months old and it doesn't seem to bother him at all, he's eating well, really mobile and it doesn't seem to bother him, however, it doesn't look right.

He is chipped in this area and the shape looks like a chip, but we've never noticed it before so welcome all help.

Hi Shelly_Edge and welcome to TFO

Whereabouts in the world are you? It's hard to see, but could that be some sort of tick or parasite?

I think we'd need to be able to see it in real life. It's obviously something not normally on leg skin, but it's just too hard to see that spot in the picture.

It could be, we're in Hampshire, UK and he's spent some long periods outdoors whilst the weather was good. It just looks too symmetrical.

It's really high up so awkward to get a shot of, especially when he's busy trying to get away...

We're getting over to a reptile specialist to get it checked.

Seeing a specialist seems like a sensible option.

I'm in Kent by the way :)

Quick update, we saw the specialist on Tuesday, and it was the microchip. He's removed it now and recommended that we leave it out until he's grown more as the needle to insert the microchips are so large and risk hurting the tortoise's internal organs.

The skin of reptiles does not have the elasticity to grip the microchip so it's worked it's way out.

He's not roaming around outside without supervision, so we'll keep it with his certs and then have a look once he's large enough to get it fitted suitably.

couple of days of iodine wash and all good now.

thanks for all the comments.
