I know that they are not predators, but can they cause any harm to my RFs? I had a squirrel come down from the tree and get a drink of water from the water saucer. Is this ok or do I now need a cover for my enclosure?

I would build a cover for it. Who knows what they might do to them. And also it will protect them from other predators that could come by their enclosure.

Ok, so you guys are just worried about what else can get in. Since I know that there is nothing else out here in the daytime..they go in their Tort house at night...I am gonna leave it uncovered. Thanks...I was just worried about the squirrels.

Squirrels come down into my breeders' enclosure to drink and pick up acorns.I've never seen them bother the torts. They usually head for the trees if one of the torts moves.

My tortoises are a greater threat to the squirrels. No worries.

Depends on the size of tortoise and the size of squirrell. I wouldn't worry too much myself if they are only out during the day. I'm not going to cover mine during the day.

How big of a tortoise are we talking about? Here in CA the ground squirrels will pick up hatchlings and eat them like a big mac. I have pics of the remains, but I'd rather not post them. If your tortoise is bigger than 3-4", then squirrels are probably not a threat anymore.

Keep in mind, squirrels are carnivores....they will eat meat. I have a neighbor who does awesome population control. Now don't get me wrong....I have nothing against squirrels, but they create huge property damage, they can burrow enough to cause a house foundation to shift/drop. I like them best when they are in the open field FAR away from my property....but that is a fantasy of mine... :)

I am glad to know this Tom. We always have at least a pair of rock squirrels living in the native wash behind our house. I hate them because they are like packrats and get into everything. Have to always chase them away. I have wondered if they could be a threat to little tortoises. Now I know...and will be even more careful about my enclosure.
