Im a member in a page in fb and and a woman asks about her tortoises and i don't see an answer! I worry when I see tortoises in a bad condition! I don't know the species of this tortoise but what's the causes of this shell condition?. I really wanna help this woman by your answers! Thank you!

This is actually a turtle, not a tortoise. I am not sure of the species due to the bad condition. I am tagging @zovick and @Yvonne G for further ID.

The shell looks too dry, so I would start by determining the lighting, humidity, water dish availability and soaking routine.

An older box turtle for sure. These turtles live in over grown areas, not in wide open spaces, which means they're used to living in humid conditions. It needs a large enclosure with a deep substrate to be able to dig into and bury himself. . . lots of hiding places and cover, and live food.
