The local aquarium had a traveling turtle set up recently, and they had one of these guys. We thought he was insanely cool and are discussing seriously adding one to our collection.

That is the problem right there. I won't get an animal unless I can provide good husbandry to it and as a bigger turtle I recognize that they should be provided a more sizable tank than I am willing to provide at this point. Maybe in the new house later this year.

Yes. I'm the same way. I didn't even fully appreciate how much room my Hermann's will need. I am very happy I didn't get a species with even more space requirements.

Yep. Although Hermanni are a small species of tortoise they are a larger mapping tortoise. Meaning they cover a lot of ground and territory. Thusly elevating the required space to be much larger.

Here is pretty much the chain of events for acquiring animals in our house.

We decide to look into an animal.

I do the research on animals needs and report to girlfriend what we are going to need.

She gives the okay on getting animal.

I build enclosure for the animal.

Girlfriend goes "Holy crap that is a big cage. Do we really need that?"

Girlfriend grumbles for six months to a year about diminishing space in the house.

Find a new animal to acquire and start process all over again.

I say find a new girlfriend lol.

Most people aren't like me though as in terms of the extreme. I've completely separated the animals living space and my living space. But then again I'll sleep in a corner surrounded by animals. Haha.

It's completely understandable though. A fantastic array of aquatic and tortoise species can be kept without huge spaces.

Map turtles are one species.

I poke a little fun, but she is fantastic. She is totally onboard with good husbandry but I think struggles with seeing the space in her head. A 6'x3'x3' enclosure sounds okay to her until I'm carrying it into the house and she is wondering why the sulcata gets a bigger bedroom than the child.

And she hasn't seen anything yet. Wait till she sees the building I have planned for the new property. It will be a work shop, kennel, and winter housing for the sulcata. I may even end up living in it myself when she throws me out of the house after she sees the size that I am planning on building this thing.

...make sure you budget for your man cave, in that building...doesn't have to be big, but make it cozy. Add a bathroom...;)

Room for indoor ponds played a big factor in choosing the house my husband and I bought nine years ago. I'm not sure knows that though. ;-p
