My dad keeps 2 sliders, a male and female, in a pond in his yard. They've always done fine together, but suddenly they are fighting terribly. They are grabbing each other by the neck and rolling all over. The male bit one of her toes off the other day. Obviously, we have separated them, but that involves letting only one out at a time. My dad doesn't want to re-home one of them, so what can we do? I know it's best to keep two females for every male, but since this doesn't seem like a mating issue, I'm not sure if would help. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I have found some of mine fighting because of:
1) they are growing too big for their enclosure
2) mating
3) food issues - ie: not feeding enough to support the increased body size
4) the one being attacked could be ill.... check and make sure this is not the case.

I hope some of this helps. I currently have 11 sliders, have had 26 at one point (I rescue and re home what I can - have 6 that are mine).
