From what I've heard and read so far, one of the reasons for that split scutes can occur, is that the eggs has been too warm in the nest ?

Does anyone know about any other reason for the hatchlings to develop split scutes ?

One of my RF males is a WC from Brazil, and has a lot of splits...

I'm not sure temperature is the only variable that generates split scutes. I have had splits occur with eggs incubated between 80 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit and far fewer at 86.2. I'm guessing humidity also plays a role as I have raised it along with the temps.

I hatched Ignacio on Cinco de Mayo!

I've heard many theories on why spllit scutes occur: temp, moisture, egg handling, position of the embryo, etc. I've never seen any hard research to support any theory though.

That split looks so very symmetric ?

And the tort itself is just beautiful !

I believe I have seen a report from a controlled study that points to temps at a key stage as one solid issue. I believe the report further pointed out that there were almost certainly other issues as well.

The russian tortoise I was supposed to get had split scutes - I changed my mind and went for one with normal looking scutes though.

My marble has a split center

Thanks for sharing !

I don't know why this is so fascinating ?

And my RF male's carapace is even so deformed, that he has difficulties to get back on his feet when he flips over !

But he is one healthy Redfoot anyway, since he actually is the father of several hundreds RF babies... :D

I'd love to read that study. Do you have a title/author so I can locate it?
