I just went in to check on her and she had died.
Her mouth was pretty well full of damp coir.

Could she have eaten coir and it impacted and had come back up?

Thanks for your advice and help, it was much appeciated

I am sorry for your loss. I just began using the coir too and that has been a concern for me as he drags it in his food bowl.

Thank you. I don't know how she ended up with the coir like that, but I am going to change the type of bedding for my other 2 torts.

I'm very sorry for your loss.

I'd hesitate to blame the coir without additional evidence though. Creatures can behave very abnormally at the end of their life and I'd wager that is when the coir was ingested. That said I understand and might change the substrate if I was in your situation as well, just because of your personal association.

My baby Bambi died last night. All I can tell you is its okay to cry. And that turtle couldn't have been in better hands. It wasn't your fault and he is in heaven eating strawberries and running in grass.

I have known of several cases where animals became impacted by over-consuming coir, which then led to death. Some were recoverable. It is generally okay if consumption is incidental. If they purposefully eat it for whatever reason, then problems like this can arise.

Sorry for your loss, baby tortoises live in a burrow with dirt and roots and all kinds of foliage, the coir was not the cause, it must have been disease.

So sorry for your loss. So many people use coir for both hatchlings and adults, it's hard to imagine that could have been the cause. :-(
