shell abnormalities

Definately got something wrong internally. A split scute or two happens occasionally, but he has a lot of them and the are very asymmetrical without well defined borders. What worries me is that he's two years old and only 47 grams. Mine were 47g at about 2-3 weeks old. Somtimes scute abnormalities appear to be only cosmetic and have nothing to do with the general health or fitness of the tortoise. In your case it seems something is amiss, both inside and out.

well tom.. ive only been on here for like 4 days now, and your my favorite!!! i really apperciate you and all of your advice you give.. your really nice and you know a ton! love it.. thanks for the help and i will just try to keep these little guys alive and comfortable for as long as possible.. oh and what does 2.4.2 sulcata and 0.0.10 paradlis mean? i see it alot..

thanks so much for all the info!! you guys are the best!! these guys are my first reptile i have ever owned.. and im not doing good so far, i was a vet tech but only worked with cats and dogs.. thanks for all the help!

oh and what does 2.4.2 sulcata and 0.0.10 paradlis mean?

This is a system used to describe what types and sexes of animal a person owns.

When Tom says "2.4.2 sulcata" it means he has 8 sulcata tortoises: 2 males, 4 females and 2 babies of undetermined sex.

0.0.10 Pardalis means that he has 10 pardalis babies.


Sorry to hear about your little sulcata. Give him lots of good care.

Before you blame yourself for the state of your baby, whatever that state turns out to be, read this one too. Kind of sad, but hopefully it will explain a lot. Given his very unusual pattern of shell abnormalities, his problems very well could be genetic and no one is to blame.

tom thanks so much for that info... very intresting and it totally rings a bell.. im the only one who still has the orignal tort from this breeder...six have died... they all had those scute, anyway one of my friends said this one was dying and gave it to me to house.. and is "hopefully" making a turn around.. but now thanks to you i will do even better about the housing of my torts.. and i will call the breeder for sure! p.s. did you write that article for me? hahah

If the whole clutch was like that, and has since died, it seems like there was some sort of chemical exposure or really far off incubation temps. Does not seem like human error after hatching.

Any way to find out any more details on how they were incubated? Has me curious what went wrong here.
