Hi I hear a lot of people building another level in their viv for their tortoise to have more space. I would like to look into doing this... But I have no idea where to start, I've seen people have ramps, how do you stop your tort falling off the side of the ramp? If anyone has done this can they please share some pics :) thanks!

Have you searched around for posts about these enclosures? They usually show pics of how they made the ramps. For siding on a ramp I've seen Popsicle sticks, and I've seen that small fencing from home depot generally used as a border fence.

I've seen this commonly done with smaller species like Russians, but you may have trouble with a fullgrown redfoot. Also consider that redfoots have a very hard time righting themselves if they flip.

There are plenty of pictures in the enclosures forums of all sorts of enclosures, some of which have ramps.

I think the best thing to do is to add more floor space, I don't think tortoises perceive vertical height as increased space like a bird would.

Just my opinion.

It depends on what you do with that vertical space.

While neat, it really appears the tort doesn't gain any actual space from that setup compared to one the same size horizontally. The ramp takes up all that is gained.

If the second story goes onto a hide box or such maybe a little helpful. But I really think if is more appeasing to us than satisfying to them.

It almost doubles the space, plus it curbs his desire to climb. The ramp takes up very little actual space. Maybe a 6 inch by 3 inch space.

With the setup you have pictured, I'd agree the tortoise would perceive more space. You've essentially made a hill leading to more floor space at the top.

I still think adding vertical space fails to provide an increase in space perceived for tortoises, but it may give additional stimulus for the tortoise(s).

I appreciate all opinions! I never considered it before seeing pics of people doing it on here :) I just thought as I can't expand massively on the floor I thought a second level would be good to add too. I know the more space the better!
